How to Balance CNA Classes with Work and Family: 5 Real-Life Student Tips

ree

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a life-changing decision—but for many students, it’s not their only responsibility. At Third-Gen Nursing Academy, we know that a lot of our students are also working, raising families, and juggling real-life demands. The good news? You can do it all—and we’re here to help you get there.

Here are 5 tried-and-true tips from real Third-Gen students who have successfully balanced CNA training with work, parenting, and life’s everyday chaos:

👟 1. Treat Class Like a Non-Negotiable Appointment

Block out class time in your schedule just like you would a job shift or a doctor’s appointment. Communicate with your family and job early so they know your training is a top priority. Boundaries now = success later.

📝 2. Use a Planner or Digital Calendar

Whether it’s paper or digital, using a planner can keep your class times, work shifts, family duties, and homework organized. Color-code it if you need to! Planning ahead helps you avoid burnout and last-minute stress.

👩🏾‍🤝‍👩🏽 3. Build Your Support System

Lean on friends, family, classmates, or childcare help where you can. You don’t have to do this alone. Many Third-Gen students carpool, study together, or trade off responsibilities with family to stay on track.

💻 4. Maximize Your Downtime

Got 30 minutes during a lunch break? Waiting in the pickup line at school? Use those moments to review flashcards, rewatch a skills video, or prep for your next test. Little wins add up.

🎯 5. Remember Your “Why”

On tough days, remind yourself why you started this journey. Maybe it's for a better future, financial stability, or to be a role model for your kids. Keep that vision close—it’ll carry you through the challenges.

Balancing CNA school with work and family isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely possible—and it’s worth it. At Third-Gen, we’re proud to serve students who are driven, determined, and doing the work to build a better future.

Need support or encouragement? You’re not alone—your Third-Gen family is here to cheer you on.
